Raabta, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon, is one part lighthearted rom-com, one part deathly serious reincarnation saga, and all parts ridiculous.This is a movie so singularly pointless, you have to wonder how the writers and the director tricked the financiers into thinking there was a story here worth telling, and why the actors preferred going to shoot every morning instead of sleeping longer hours. This is the kind of movie that film critics must endure so you don’t have to. I’m going with one out of five.

Frankly, there is not a single scene in the screenplay which is heart-warming. Consequently, the viewers passively watch the reincarnation drama unfold. Siddharth-Garima’s dialogues are as pathetic as their screenplay. Many of them are so terrible that they make the viewers cringe in their seats.On the whole, Raabta is a terribly boring fare which will meet with a disastrous fate at the box-office.

Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon's film promised a refreshing take on a relationship based on cockiness instead of conventional sap, Dinesh Vijan's Raabta is let down. By the time Deepika Padukone brings her almighty legs to the screen in an attempt to resurrect the film with a jig, all is already lost. Do not watch Raabta, unless you already suffered through it in a past life.

Vijan’s Raabta (Urdu for connection) is thematically a ‘love-never-dies’ sort of a film, and it wants to look glossy, which means the characters are likely to make transitions in time and space. With such predictability comes the challenge of striking a balance between two different time zones. Raabta struggles real hard there.Poor writing is Raabta’s nemesis provided you don’t want to settle for a ‘being there’ done that’ kind of a story.

There are too many obvious influences: the saccharine first half is full of walk-and-talks in a beautifully shot European city (Before Sunset); the tribal past is right out of Game Of Thrones — Dothrakis are replaced by Murakis and astronomy is given similar importance; a scene towards the end is a forced throwback to Titanic.If sparks flew more organically, it would have been easier to make a connection with this epic tale of love.

The cliched script leaves you bored. Also, the 300 inspired past scenes don’t make much sense. Raabta unfortunately doesn’t let us enjoy neither the present nor the past completely. It is a passable film.Raabta is a confused film that never establishes a firm balance between its crossover love stories. Give this one a miss! A 2/5 it is.

Unfinished business in a previous life brings together Saira (Kriti Sanon), Shiv (Sushant Singh Rajput) and Zakir (Jim Sarbh) in the present one in Dinesh Vijan’s directorial debut Raabta. Predestination fills many of the holes in Siddharth-Garima’s script, such as Saira’s attraction to Shiv despite his loutish behaviour and her inability to resist Zakir’s pallor and signposted creepiness. Raabta reincarnates a tried and tested formula without capturing the mystery and sense of aching loss that mark the better entries in the genre. Some experiences don’t last beyond a single lifetime.

The second half is dominated by a fierce, brutish warrior who falls in love with a brave princess. The medieval arc sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s almost like seeing Game Of Thrones being inserted into the iconic, tender romance Before Sunrise.It’s the contemporary parts of the film that are relatively enjoyable. Watch this if you are in the mood for a cute romance that is at fantasy flight risk.

To be fair, most of us, who have marvelled at the likes of reincarnation films such as Karz, Om Shanti Om, Madhumati, Mahal, Neel Kamal, Kudrat and Karan-Arjun, have laughed off Mirziya and Love Story 2050. Raabta comes somewhere in the middle. It tries to toe the line by not shrugging off reincarnation totally. Raabta has all the right ingredients of a ‘much seen’ Bollywood film – the abs, the legs, the looks, the songs, the locations, a solo dance number ( I refuse to call it an ‘item number’) with Deepika Padukone and the reincarnation story. It is a Sushant Singh film all the way and all those who like him will find it endearing and fun. For the rest, it is a chance you might want to take.
