Half Girlfriend Movie Reviews

Mohit Suri, who knows how to whip up drama and create moments, is woefully off his game here. "Half Girlfriend" is a misfire of epic proportions. Blame it on the book, or the script that it spawned, but this movie is excruciating to endure. I'm going with one out of five. It's the cinematic equivalent of an ulcer.

OneWordReview... #HalfGirlfriend: Unimpressive. A few emotional moments + Arjun-Shraddha stand out. Expected so much more from Mohit Suri.

I enjoyed the first half. Suri knows how to create drama, and sweeps us up in places, enough for us to ignore the constructed-ness of the characters and the plot. In the second, which is doused in melodrama and swelling `gaana’, I was left with that looming question: is half better than none?

The first half breezes through, but post interval proceedings hang; in tandem with the hangdog expression worn by the hero. Arjun is sincere, but seems too urban for an ideal `Bihari’ fit. And Shraddha, who looks her loveliest here, lacks gravitas. Finally, half girlfriend or boyfriend is that person many of us have encountered on campus. However, do we really want to relive those memories? It depends entirely on the mood.

Half Girlfriend is about two halfwits who belong together. It is a film that claims to celebrate romance and undying passion and gates both Bill and Indian, but all it does is applaud a spoilt man who believes he's a scapegoat. He is not. He is, in fact, a man who hands the woman he loves a butcher knife, gets down on all fours, sticks his neck over a earthen pot of biryani and goes baaaaa. Off with his head.

The first half has a better structure and seems more cohesive than what follows post the interval. There are some jarring and over the top moments that somewhat kill the feel of an organic love story that was beautifully coming together in the beginning. Also the portions before the big climax revelation are too jumpy, and feel disconnected. Half Girlfriend has full drama and works primarily due to Arjun Kapoor’s stellar performance and his crackling chemistry with Shraddha Kapoor.

here Mohit Suri completely loses his grip on the subject. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the filmmaker hasn’t done any justice to the story. In fact, a lot of the scenes in the film range from drama to 90s melodrama, taking you back to his last flop film HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI. On the whole, HALF GIRLFRIEND comes across as an overtly dramatic piece of cinematic work that fails to create the desired impact. At the box office, it will struggle to survive post the opening weekend.

You have seen it all before, you know what’s going to happen next, yet you refuse to give up on it. Half Girlfriend, the romantic drama featuring Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor, evokes those sentiments.Watch this film if you are in the mood for a romance punctuated by a generous dose of drama, tears and heartache. You may not become any wiser in love with this film, but you are not going to die of boredom either.

After enduring the pointless movie for 2 hours and 15 minutes, I am glad I didn't waste my time reading the book. The million dollar question remains - if the book didn't really get good reviews, why would anybody make it into a film in the first place? Watch the film if you have absolutely nothing to do this week or are an Arjun, Shraddha Kapoor fan.

I would recommend going to a restaurant or café, chatting with friends, reading a good book, getting a spa done or whatever, just whatever that makes you happy and keeps you occupied during the weekend rather than watching this boring, silly tale. If you are indeed planning to watch Half Girlfriend, don’t tell me that I didn’t warn you before! I couldn’t rate it more than a single star.

'Half Girlfriend' is full of loopholes. Madhav, for instance, is vocal about wanting to study Sociology at St Stephen's College, Delhi, but sadly the makers failed to research enough to learn the course isn't available there. Also, a blotched up job by the VFX team made Bill Gates' (also referred as Bill Gateva) special appearance seem rather miserable. Kapoor's efforts at delivering a heart-wrenching scene as Madhav makes an earnest confession, falls flat, given that the audience was evidently humoured by Gate's face shabbily pasted on someone. Finally, after watching Riya's poorly lip-synced songs, Justin Bieber would be having the last laugh. Now, let's talk about the good parts in 'Half Girlfriend'. The thing is... forget it, let's leave it half way.
